Thanksgiving According to Children

Thanksgiving - Imagined by Children

It is important to teach children the history of American Traditions and why we celebrate these days annually.

Have you taught your children or grandchildren the history of Thanksgiving?
What would they say if asked about Thanksgiving?

Watch these fun videos of children describing their view on what the history of Thanksgiving is.

Do you have any children attending your Thanksgiving meal? Ask them what they think Thanksgiving is all about, you might be surprised!

Sometimes kids really do say the darnedest thing!

This video is imagined, written & voice over by children. Adult actors play the part!

The History of Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving Traditions

What comes to mind when you think about Thanksgiving meals?

Turkey? Ham?
Cranberries? Stuffing?
Pumpkin Pie? Apple Pie?

Fun Fact: 90% of meals on Thanksgiving include turkey as the main entree

You might be surprised the hear that the first Thanksgiving meal did not include any of these items. The European Settlers and Native Americans most likely feasted on Lobster, Deer, and Fish. According to historians, the feast lasted nearly three days!

Roast turkey and pumpkin pie were not staple Thanksgiving dishes until 1827 when Sarah Hale - famous writer - published recipes in a New York magazine to include pumpkin pie, stuffing and turkey in the Thanksgiving meal.

Although Thanksgiving celebrations dated back to the first European settlements in America, it was not until the 1860s that Abraham Lincoln declared the last Thursday of November to be a national holiday.

The First Turkey Pardon
In 1989 George H.W Bush was the first President of the United States to pardon a turkey on Thanksgiving Day. After that, year after year, the current President will pardon a turkey to go live out its days on a farm.

Fun Fact: The gift of a turkey is a symbol of "good cheer."

Veteran's Day 2014

Happy Veteran's Day
On the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918, an armistice, or temporary cessation of hostilities, was declared between the Allied nations and Germany in the First World War, then known as “the Great War.” Commemorated as Armistice Day beginning the following year, November 11th became a legal federal holiday in the United States in 1938.

Thank you to all of our Military personnel for the sacrifices you have made fought for our freedom.

Red Tailed Hawk at Pine Needles-Mid Pines

The Hawk

It seems that Pine Needles draws attention to more than just Golfers.
Anyone interested in playing golf with this critter?

Have you seen this Red Tailed Hawk around the course?
Red Tailed Hawks are the most common types of Hawk in North America.
Even though this bird seems big, it only weighs in at about 3 pounds.

Did you know that Hawks enjoy wide open spaces?
Maybe this is why this Hawk has enjoyed spending time at Pine Needles

Red Tail Hawks are not dangerous to humans.
Let's just hope they do not mistake your golf ball for a snack and fly away with it!
