Happy Memorial Day

Memorial Day is an American holiday that honors men
and women who died while serving in the U.S. military. Originally known as Decoration Day, it originated in the years following the Civil War and became an official Federal holiday in 1971. Many Americans celebrate Memorial Day by visiting cemeteries or memorials, holding family gatherings and participating in parades.

The Civil War claimed more lives than any conflict in U.S. history, requiring the establishment of the country's first national cemeteries. By the late 1860's Americans in various towns and cities had begun holding springtime tributes to these countless fallen soldiers, decorating their graves with flowers and reciting prayers.

In 1966 the Federal Government declared Waterloo, New York, the official birthplace of Memorial Day. Waterloo was chosen because it hosted an annual, community-wide event. During this event, businesses would close and residents would decorate graves of
soldiers with flowers and flags.

For decades, Memorial Day was observed on May 30, but in
1968 Congress passed the Uniform Monday Holiday Act, which
established Memorial Day as the last Monday in May in order to create a three-day weekend for federal employees. This change
went into effect in 1971 and this same law declared Memorial
Day as a federal holiday.

Director of Golf's Message

It is with mixed emotions that I inform you that Jessica Marion
will be resigning from Pine Needles & Mid Pines as the Membership Coordinator to move to Georgia and begin her career as a
Dental Assistant. Jessica joined us directly out of college and
is now ready to take the next step in her life. She will be
relocating with her significant other, Anthony, who will
be stationed in Savannah, GA as an Army Ranger.

We are deeply saddened to be losing Jessica; however, this is
a tremendous opportunity that she would like to embark upon. Jessica has been a great asset to our operation and more
importantly our Pine Needles Club Membership for nearly
two years. Jessica's last day will be June 15th and will continue
with her normal duties and training her replacement. With
that being said I am happy to announce that Richelle Modolo
will be transitioning from her role in our Food & Beverage Department to our Membership Coordinator.

Richelle joined our team in January and has demonstrated
the skills needed to excel in the hospitality industry. Richelle
has previously worked at the St. Francis Yacht Club in San
Francisco, CA after graduating from Methodist University
in Fayetteville, NC. Richelle will start her training this week
with Jessica as well as with Golf Operations. If you get a chance, please say hello so Richelle can introduce herself to you.

Speaking on behalf of Mid Pines, Pine Needles and the
Bell family, we wish Jessica the best of luck with her new
career and life in Savannah and Richelle with her new
position as our Membership Coordinator.
